ROYAL THAI POLICE LT. GENERAL JIRABHOP "KONG" BHURIDEJ - THE ZERO EXPERIENCE OIL COMPANY DIRECTOR
The gas and oil business has always attracted some shady characters and in Thailand it's no exception.
So how does someone with zero retail and gas/oil business experience get a cushy directorship position on Thailand's largest retail gas/oil business? He becomes a senior police officer tasked with investigating corruption along with close family connections to the Thai royal family.
PTTOR - the retail arm of Thailand's massive state-backed energy company PTT - is a huge business, generating tens of billions of dollars in annual revenue. The company serves roughly nine million customers across eight countries, operates Thailand’s dominant retail fuel network and the ubiquitous Café Amazon chain, and maintains a multi-billion-dollar market capitalization.
Yet Jirabhop "Kong" Bhuridej, a senior Thai officer who has unexplained lunch meetings with wanted cyberscam criminals, absolutely no experience at all in the energy/retail sector is on the board of PTTOR. (As highlighted by this blog before Kong is also on the board of directors at Airports of Thailand - another massive and very important Thai company).
Despite never even bothering to attend a meeting in person - he just dials in - he gets a nice little pay packet and, of course, can warn PTTOR of any impending police investigation. PTT has, of course, well-documented form when it comes to shady dealings.
In fact PTT and PTTOR are so shady that the world's largest sovereign wealth fund the Council of Ethics of the Government Pension Fund of Norway divested from both companies due to "unacceptable risk that the companies contribute to serious violations of individuals’ rights in situations of war or conflict".
I guess the Council of Ethics should also be informed of Kong's dodgy unexplained lunch meetings with wanted cyberscammers and the quality of people PTTOR put on their board.
